Venus Sweet Shrub in pen & Ink
I decided to take a drawing class at the local community college. That class was full, but they offered a class called “Nature’s Notebook” and since I’m now surrounded by a whole lot of nature I thought I’d give it a whirl. The instructor, an avid gardener and artist named Peter Loewer, a/k/a “the wild gardener” brings in items from his garden for us to draw. He will lecture a bit at the beginning of class about styles of drawing and particular drawings of plants and then we begin drawing.
I was in the art studio one day when some women from NY came in looking at the art. One woman who had a thick NY accent told us about the NY Accent test.
Wanna take it? OK, here goes:
Say L-O-G…log
Say H-O-G…hog
Say F-O-G…fog
Say D-O-G…dog
If you pronounced dog just like log, hog and fog, congratulations, you have failed the NY accent test. However, if you pronounced dog unlike the first 3 and more like dawg, congratulations you passed the NY accent test!
If you’re wondering, I passed the test with flying colors. 🙂

Nice drawings!
Is this a NY accent or a Brooklyn accent? 🙂

They are the same. At least mine is.

I LOVE that you are taking this course! I have always been fascinated by those botanical drawings from the 1700s and on… the detail is incredible, as in yours. I’d like to see you go further with this – maybe search out and sketch the varieties of flora around your neighborhood. Have I said how much I love these?!?!?!?!

No garden for me this year.

Always good to take a class that you wouldn’t normally choose… I like these drawings a lot!

I agree. I would not have taken this class had the other one not been full. Turns out I’m really enjoying it.

Sketching on Whidbey Island
Not so here; Dog,hog, bog, log, tog, fog, all sound the same. I like your sketches. Natures offers more objects to sketch than you’ll ever be able to complete. It’s wonderful

Yes, I’m learning that! I recently drew yarrow. Wow! complicated but fun.

Lovely, sensitive drawings! Glad you haven’t lost your accent…I’ve heard it takes eons. lol You should be able to do lots of nature sketching out there…critters too.

There’s lots of stuff to sketch. And lots of NYersto talk to. I will never lose my accent even if I tried.

All are lovely studies Carol!
I thought there wS only one American accent 😃
Still trying to figure out when exactly “t”is silenced like in internet or painting 😃
June 9, 2016 at 4:20 pm
Carol King
there are many American accents. NY, Boston, different southern accents, SoCal, Wisconsin etc., etc.
I’m not sure about a silenced “t”. I pronounce the “Ts” in both those words.
thanks for your kind comment about the drawings, Padmaja.

Good for you, taking a drawing class. Maybe that is the extra push I need to spend some evenings at the life drawing sessions, locally. I like your drawings, especially the branch! The accent test is really funny. Somehow, I knew you would pass.

Leslie, I didn’t think I would like these types of drawing classes, but I’m really enjoying them. I would love to find life drawing classes here. Go for it.

Beautifully observed drawings. I particularly like the two of the Venus Sweet Shrub – they’re all great and the class sounds cool! I too have been drawing flowers recently but gave up. You have inspired me to try again.

June, I’m glad that you were inspired to try flowers again. I look forward to that blog post.

What great drawings!!! You did well 🙂 Loved the NY accent test – I’m sure that applies to KY, too, but we do pronounce things very differently, especially in southern KY. I remember the first time I heard a cousin say, “Deddy, kin I have a pawp? Which translates to “Daddy, can I have a soft drink?” ha ha
June 9, 2016 at 4:24 pm
Carol King
Rhonda, thanks for your comment about the drawings And thanks for the translation of the southern KY accent. Not sure if I could have figured out pawp on my own.

Well, I fail but as a former Chicagoan, I did not really expect to pass. Not much Chicago accent remains since I left in 1977. Very nice drawings!
June 9, 2016 at 4:26 pm

You left Chicago almost 40 years ago! That’s a long time. Glad you like the drawings.

Yes, I left for school and grad school. My husband and I ended up staying in Indiana after leaving Purdue in 1977. Can it really be that long ago? I never had the real Chicago accent though.

Thanks Jean. I was happy with the lichen as well. Did you know there are little hairs on lichen. Kinda weird.

Carol, your drawings are excellent! It sounds like a fun class. My mom will be visiting in North Carolina in July and she promised me she would go to that Mexican restaurant and give me the name to pass along to you. Enjoy that class!

Hi Candy, thanks for your comment. It is a fun class. I await your mom’s report. Thanks.

I passed, guess you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Haven’t lived in NY since ’73. I’ve also been told that you won’t lose any accent of origin if you moved after the age of 12.
June 20, 2016 at 9:51 pm
Carol King
Hi Li, not sure if I knew you were from NY. I would need professional assistance to get rid of my accent. Glad you like the drawings.

Li_B (@lifesastitch)
PS when we were kids, my Maryland cousins used to pay my sister to say “I sore a dog,” can’t figure out how to spell dog in a NY accent, but you get the point.

Jessica
You will know you have lost your NY accent when everyone of those words is two syllables. I had no idea the name Tim had two until my friend from Alabama started talking about her husband of the same name, hilarious! Gorgeous drawings!
June 20, 2016 at 9:51 pm
Carol King
SO TRUE Jessica. I’ve noticed the southerners have way more syllables in their words. LOL

Ahahaha, nice! Your posts are full of good works and lovely sentences. I’m not familiar with a NY accent (*I might as well ask our linguistics professors one day!). Cheers, Sadami

I’d be interested in what your linguistics professors say. Thanks for your comment on my drawings.

The drawings are terrific! The accent is terrific. Do you have any preference working in pencil or pen & ink? And can you use anything else with pen—like, can you work in pen & sap or pen & fish blood? If not, I move to shorten it to ‘working in pencil’ and ‘working in pen’ OR lengthen the former to ‘working in pencil & lead’ for the sake of consistency.
There—I’ve posted a reply. Be careful what you wish for.

Hahaha I’ve always wondered why it’s “pen and ink” and not just pen.
