Drawing exercise – Creamer – pencil
A recent study out of Sweden now shows that two cups of coffee a day helps to PREVENT strokes. It wasn’t long ago that coffee wasn’t good for you. Now it is. I can’t keep up. I’m still waiting for the day when they tell you cigarettes and french fries are good for you. (I’ve quit the cigarettes and am trying to cut down on the fries.)
I remember one time many, many years ago when The Husband, The brother-in-law (the Husband’s brother) and I went to see an off, off Broadway show called “Smoking Newports and eating French Fries”. We went to the show based on the title, cause really, how could it be bad? It was so bad we walked out even before intermission.
The Husband drinks TONS of coffee. He is the epitome of the cop drinking coffee stereotype. He will make a pot of coffee in the morning, drink it all, go to work, drink more coffee and then come home and make coffee before he goes to bed. I have MAYBE one cup of coffee in the morning. Sometimes.
The best coffee EVER is to be found in the Caribbean, Central and South America. Give me a cafe con leche any time!
I remember one time when the aforementioned brother-in-law was living in Seattle and came back for a visit. He brought his own coffee. It was right at the time when the whole West Coast coffee Starbucks snobbery was starting and I was HIGHLY insulted. Really Jimmy! I have never forgotten that!
So here’s to coffee! I like mine with milk and sugar. If I have a stroke I’m gonna be really pissed!

I love coffee too…but one or two cups a day no more than that…gosh, I thought it was ok…now you have got me going to look up how it involves strokes…geesh…lol
But that coffee from Central America is wonderful. Too bad we can’t get it here. I heard that they do keep the best for themselves….never trust that Juan Valdez guy.☺
Now that creamer is looking godd. It is hard to do the multisided jars etc.

I love coffee ice cream too. Most times I can pass on the coffee.

The Husband
Oh how my lovely bride exaggerates.
Yes, I do love coffee.
Two to three cups in the morning when I arise like a ball of sunshine and maybe one to two cups during the workday.
I don’t drink coffee before going to bed.
Nothing beats patrolling the streets of Brooklyn with a nice, hot Dunkin Donuts coffee. It helps the day/night go by.
There are no donuts included.
I’ve only had to throw out a perfectly good cup of coffee going to a radio run once in 17 years while working. Boy was I pissed. I thought my partner was going in to cardiac arrest as he saw my full cup of coffee fly out of the truck window. That was not a good night in Brooklyn.
There are many ways our existence can come to an end. If the good Lord wants me to stroke-out after my coffee—well—at least I enjoyed a nice cup prior to the end.
I also would like mine with milk and two sugars please.
And by the way, the sketch of the creamer is wonderful. It would be even better if it had cream in it for my coffee.

Oh dear Husband, it is you who exaggerates. How many times have I seen you come home from a day tour and make a pot of coffee at 6 pm. Or if we are out to dinner and you order coffee only to come home and go to bed. How do you do this? Nevertheless, since the study said coffee PREVENTS strokes, I think you will live a long, healthy life. (You better, or I’ll kill you!)
I remember when you told me that you had to toss out a perfectly good cup of coffee when you got a call. I think you thought about that coffee the whole rest of the day.

Great sketch-i always find objects like that hard to do. I love your description of your husband as the typical coffee drinking NYC cop and his rebuttal of that is equally funny-a ball of sunshine! I’m easing back on the coffee in favour of herbal teas these days but still need my morning cup to get me going!

Hi Nicola, Yes, The Husband is a ball of sunshine when he awakes with or without coffee.
I’ve been off coffee for a while since I had some kidney stones, but now I’ve been having a cup in the morning a few days a week. The other days it’s black tea.

Great drawing Carol! I love espresso coffee (in a nice cappuccino, thank you). I am searching for the perfect home cappuccino maker, one that makes delicious drinks, is easy to use, and won’t break the bank. Although mornings, if I had to choose between sending the kids to college or being able to make a perfect cappuccino at home, I might choose the java.

Charlie had an espresso maker for years. He called it Tonino. He names many of his appliances. I don’t know why. Perhaps you can ask him for advice. He may have a cappuccino maker as well.

I haven’t looked in here for a while – enjoyed catching up on the stories, always a pick-me-up, and pictures Carol – love your abstract and the bicycle, and this creamer… off to make myself a cup of coffee immediately!

We have a visitor here at the house who brought her own HALF-CAFF coffee. It’s not bad, though it feels like I am starting my day with low-test instead of Premium. I can’t drink coffee after 12 noon; it keeps me awake and I spend the night awake, thinking of all the stupid things I’ve said to people since first grade.
I remain appalled at the Starbux legacy of too many choices; I like nothing better than ordering “coffee, BLACK,” after standing in line for five minutes behind some pretentious yabbo whose coffee order is more complicated than the Balkan Wars. “I’d like a mocha-vanilla cocoa-tinged decaf crappuccino with goat-flavored sugar– free range, please– and frothed milk, not steamed damn you!”
Nice drawing! It reminds me of a comfortable diner. xoxo

OMG! I remember you in Starbucks that day. Indignant that the woman in front of you was taking waaaaay too long with her order. You practically screamed, COFFEE, BLACK to the counter person while you were in a huff.
Coffee may prevent strokes, but your reaction to the Starbucks purchaser who loves their half caf, half decaf, soy latte may have you toppling over with foam coming out of YOUR mouth!

My husband and I share a pot of coffee in the morning; sometimes 2 pots, depending how early we rise. That’s 3 cups each per pot. Then in the afternoon we share another pot or 2, then one more pot in the evening. All in all, I guess I consume on average about 2 pots of coffee a day myself, most of the time. Oh yeah, I even drink a cup before I go to bed. I sleep 8 hours a night, except lately due to the pup.
Love the drawing, Carol! You are really good at details and blending!

I’m a cupper in the morning, and a half of cupper in the evening, now my wife on the other hand is a coffee drinking fool, and if it’s not a cup of coffee, it’s straight up Mountain Dew and never gains an once of weight. Can’t stand the woman! Just kidding!

Give me a Venti Cafe Vanilla Frappucino with whipped cream any day of the week….but not after 3:00 PM! And when I brought coffee from Seattle, it was because my friend Sheila was with me, and she’s a real coffee drinker. It wasn’t Starbuck’s though. It was from another coffee shop called Torrefazione’s. The coffee was good but I think she really went there because there was a mature, but hot barista she liked to ogle.
Who knows what we missed in the second act of Smoking Newports and Eating French Fries? I remember the first act of “The Beach Boy Musical” being terrible, but my friend Anthony insisted we stay for Act 2. It turned out to be hysterical. It wasn’t about “The Beach Boys,” but just took place in a beach setting. I do remember laughing a lot during the 2nd act, but the only thing I really recall was the giant beach ball in the middle of the stage with the Wicked Witch of the West appearing in it like in the Wizard of Oz. A campy classic! As you can imagine, it didn’t run long.

Your brother is partial to a Mint Mocha Frappucino. The first time I saw him drinking it I laughed and laughed. And then I made him give me some.
The 2nd half of “smoking newports” would have sucked even more than the part we saw. I’m sure of it.

I could write a book full of all the reasons why I’m going to have a stroke. Now I can add another chapter about how I don’t drink coffee. Then I can have a stroke from lugging that weighty tome around.
April 6, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Ha! I could write a similar book. But don’t lug that tome around. Have it digitized and you can read it on a kindle.

I don’t know which I like more, the drawing or the post and all the comments it generated 🙂 Thanks for sharing. Sorry, but I now have a GOLD CARD from Starbucks, I’ve spent so much money there on my grande decaf nonfat vanilla lattes (which are much better for me that those carmel macchiatos I used to drink all the time). In the summer, nothing beats a caramel frappacino, though, and you just have to splurge when you’re on vacation. My GPS can tell me where every local Starbucks is located 🙂 I’m a dweeb, what can I say?? I do like Dunkin Donuts coffee for home – good, smooth, and just strong enough.

While I am not great fan of coffee, I cannot resist a cafe con leche. I have tried my first one in Madrid, and it was love from the first sip! There is a version of it in Israel called cafe Afooh. I think it means “fluffy coffee”, not sure, but it is very good. Sorry I’ve been less active in blogging and commenting – first traveling, now am back but my kitty is unwell.
Love the pitcher!

This creamer is spot on. You use your pencil with such energy, your drawings come alive. Good drawing to go along with a caffeine post about coffee. I drink coffee and don’t feel quite on my game without……

Thanks for your comments on the creamer. I really enjoy drawing and I loved the drawing class I took with my sister and nephew. I will have to do that again soon.

I think i fit into the coffee drinking crazie steriotype too. lol
I guess it is just one of those things like a girlies cuddly toy.
It a safety blanket, rocket fuel, for me its a shining light.
Ahhhh coffee. lol

Anyway, rambling aside, your sketch is awesome.

Hi Carol, hahahahahHa Yea and if you order a coffee in one of the uppity coffee shops how do you know what a small medium or large is oh i know the large is around six bucks. The whole process of ordering is quite time consuming and intimidating the menus extensive. I usually pass and order tea becuase the people behind me are pushing and panting trying to get their next six buck fix.
Now french fries are much easier to order, i’ll take mine fried with a side of ketchup

One time I was desperate for some coffee or tea before what was going to be a very long and boring meeting. There was a starbucks in the lobby of the building, but I hate Starbucks coffee cause it always tastes burnt to me. And it’s a zillion dollars. So I ordered a tea. I got upstairs settled down and took a nice long sip of me tea….and almost gagged. it was Earl Grey. That bergamot skeeves me!

Great drawing Carol but I take mine black. My current favorite coffee is Bustelo from Mexico but I really got turned on to good, rich coffee when I worked in Puerto Rico. Yum – I used to drink coffee all day. Today it’s decaf after lunch or no ZZZZ’s.

Carol, I enjoyed your coffee rant and your drawing. Lovely technique with the pencil. I’m a coffee addict too, although I try desperately hard to limit my intake. I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to coffee. I can only drink my own, which I grind fresh before filling the coffee pot. Great post as always.
