3 crows – watercolor on Arches 300 lb coldpress
Western North Carolina welcomed me. With over 300% more rain than they normally get. Gee, thanks. I’m aware that there was a drought, and I’m happy that it’s over, but seriously WNC. You didn’t have to go out of your way and overdo it.
Settling in has been interesting. The Husband and I were behind two women at Ingles, the local grocery store. They had 20 bottles of wine and a few small cans of cat food. The Husband looks at me and says “I hope they have a cat.” Then my niece sent me this article: Never Drink Alone Again Because Now There’s Wine for Cats. So there’s that. In NYC you can’t buy wine in the grocery stores, so if you were getting 20 bottles of wine AND cat food you had to make two stops. Not here.
I did the above painting using the grisaille method, shown below. Then I added color resulting in the painting above.
The grisaille has a Asian feel to me which I really liked. But I liked adding the color as well. Maybe I’ll do a 2nd one in gray only.
And here’s something to cheer you up for those who may feel like you’re getting a cold this holiday season:
My friend Carlene, one of the most creative people I know, got a bad cold and ran out to the drugstore for supplies. She created this holiday tree out of her cold medicine and tissues. I love it!
This Thursday is Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. I’m happy and thankful to have you in my life.

…great subject–great atmosphere…and if it’s any consolation, we’re (Interior of B. C. Canada) in the middle of our first major snowstorm–8″ expected today alone. But, I totally love it, so no worries.

Oh Carol! Wow! I like the grisaille but the color one beats it hands down! It softened edges and gave it that beautiful wet look. …and I really like it that it is crows for some reason. Excellent.

Thought I liked the grey one, then thought the colour, now not sure. Lets just say I love them both, why choose?!

I must be getting old. I first read the title as “3 Cows…” and was looking at the paintings like puzzles searching for the hidden COWS! Both paintings are beautiful but I must admit that I liked the monochromatic grisaille precisely for its “oriental” (I think this application is PC) qualities. 🙂

I guess the city has been taken out of you…the birds aren’t pigeons. lol I like this a lot. How large is it? I can imagine it as a full sheet. The grisaille is really lovely both on its own and with the color added. Love the story about the wine and the cat food. Sounds like they had thing covered. If you are lucky here on LI you can find grocery stores that do sell bottles of wine…if you aren’t fussy about what is in them. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

Neat method/technique for your artwork. I see you carried over the dark grey into your lone wolf! And your friend is very creative indeed. That must have been one bad cold to warrant all of those meds and tissues and such. Were some for her cat or dog? LOL. Hope she’s feeling better and your trip is going well.

I like both the black and white and the colored versions. Sometimes it is hard to decide whether to add color or not. That is some Christmas tower – kind of like the towers of treats you can get from the on line specialty stores, but with fewer calories. LOL

Beautiful work–I love crows, and this looks like my back yard. I was gambling in Cherokee early in November (my wonderful son came down and took care of my husband). Just a three-day break. Gorgeous country. Happy Thanksgiving; I guess you’ll be baking a sweet ‘tater pie.

Both look wonderful Carol, as you said the grissaile has a touch of Asian flavor. Your friend’s holiday tree is stunning! Very creative.
Have a great Thanks giving week!

Love the pictures – both – but probably the colour one more. And here in the UK we seem to be having some of your NC rain! Not needed.

Happy Thanksgiving Carol!! If I were to pick just one the colored grisaille is perhaps my favorite. A very Asian feel to both and both are stunning. Cat food, 20 bottles of wine and a cold medication Christmas tree all seem like an intriguing combination to me. Story time?

Everything about this picture is really wonderful! You’ve more than risen to the challenge of exchanging industrial girders and rusty water towers for trees and birds – and you’ve totally captured those crows with their crow-like stance…if you will…. Yes, I agree, the neutral image does have an air of Japanese art – both work very well. Lovely painting! Will be thinking of you enjoying your Thanksgiving tomorrow – have a great one.

Happy American Thanksgiving. We’re back home now and I’m happily reacquainting myself with my art supplies. That painting makes me like crows. We have our fair share here. Once C was driving home form the grocery store in his pick up with the groceries in the back. When he got home one steak was missing from the three pack of steaks. Had to be one of those pesky crows. They grow ’em big here.

Love the paintings and their mood, each a little different.
Yes, why not a holiday tree out of cold medicine!
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I ate and ate, and drank and drank, and thankfully suffered not a bit from either.

I love your painting. The grisaille is powerful on its own. Also love the “cold tree” I could use one myself:) Happy Merry, Carol!
