Asparagus is the only thing left in the produce section of Market Basket during the recent boycott. I wonder what it says about the people in that neighborhood? If you don’t know the story, Market Basket is a grocery store that treats its employees pretty well and they can actually make a decent living according to my friend and photographer extraordinaire Mary Schwalm. The majority owners ousted the CEO Arthur T. Demoulas and replaced him with Arthur S. Demoulas. Yep, they are cousins so this wasn’t just business drama, this was also family drama! Customers and workers boycotted until the old CEO (Arthur T.) was reinstated. Yay Market Basket. My friends in New England are happier today.
I felt badly for the asparagus. So badly I decided to paint some. Now that I’ve painted it, I’m going to steam it with some olive oil and a pinch of Himalayan pink salt and eat it. But only the tips. I don’t really like the stalks. So out they go. Sorry stalks. (I will put them in the compost pile now that NYC is composting.)

Wow, what a drama! Glad they resolved it and power to the people!!! Love the lightness of the asparagus painting. I don’t care for them but they do make good models for painting 🙂

I LOVE them and love the image. Try grilling or broiling them sometime with a little olive oil and you might like the stalks. Or maybe it is because we get very young asparagus out here!

I saw this story about Market Basket on the news the other night and practically jumped for joy to hear the story. I used to work at a large chain and there was no way I could have supported myself entirely on that income, alone. Good that these employees can and excellent that management and they have communication. Asparagus? Yum!

Asparagus is our “fancy” vegetable to serve when we have people over. And we use that Himalayan pink salt too- Kirk got a bottle when we braved the second week crowds at Trader Joe’s to see what all the fuss was about. Don’t get me started about Orlando trendies. Usually we make a Hollandaise sauce, but sometimes I just braise it in olive oil. In the needlepoint shop I do eBay sales for, we recently sold a GIANT canvas of… a bunch of asparagus. It was like 3″ square. What a nice addition it would make to some silly Yuppie kitchen that has thirty foot ceilings !!!

Yum!!! I like them better roasted instead of steamed. These look luscious and ready to cook. Great color in this.

Beautiful sketch.
Lucky you. Most of the time I realize that I needed to draw the food only when I happily lean back from dinner table, belly full..

Ha people power-I love it when the masses stand up for what’s right. Poor asparagus-I’d have felt sorry for it too. Great job painting it and I’m sure it tasted lovely-I like it grilled and drizzled in (vegan) garlic butter which totally negates the healthy green veg aspect!

Sad, sad lonely stalks. What did they ever do? Don’t they at least get a pinch of Himalayan pink salt too? 😉

The photograph makes a statement about inexplicable loneliness. In your painting, the asparagus look happy, as they have been selected to satisfy your nutritional needs.

when one’s heart and mind is open… painting subjects just jump out at you from all directions… all day long. And the mighty asparagus… triumphs again.
