Roberta watching the snow fall on Madison Square Park, NYC – watercolor on 10″ x 12″1/2″ 140# Arches coldpress
I am petrified that I am starting to have short-term memory loss. Or the beginnings of dementia. I can’t remember anything anymore. Ask me what I did yesterday. Who knows. What’s that person’s name? Not a clue. It’s frustrating. Words are on the tip of my tongue and then I forget them or what I was going to say.
I just read in AARP magazine about a test for dementia. (Why do they continue to send me this magazine? I’ve already told them I am too young for it.) AARP magazine could NOT be more depressing. It’s dedicated to stories on how to watch out for scams on older people. How to make sure that you have enough money after retirement so you’re not eating cat food. Tests to see how long you’ll live. And, of course, tests for dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Which brings me to my point. (Yes, not only did I have one but I remembered what it was since the first paragraph of this post!) Two friends and I went to see a Broadway musical (which we all hated). Since it was Valentine’s day week, I got them small little heart-shaped boxes of Russell Stover chocolates. As we were seated I reached down and handed them the boxes saying “Happy Thanksgiving!” They stared at me. Then we all laughed. But still.
In this month’s AARP magazine there was a test for Alzheimer’s involving peanut butter. If you could smell peanut butter with your right nostril but not your left (or vice versa I don’t remember), you may have early stages of the disease. I can tell you for sure my dog does not have it. You can open a jar of peanut butter 3 blocks away and she’ll smell it.
On another note, which has nothing to do with peanut butter or tests for dementia, I will give you the best review of the musical we all hated by my friend Josh who saw it a week after we did. He said, and I quote:
“The first act was awful.
The second act was better because I was at Starbucks.”
The above painting was done using a reference photo from my friend Judy who recently rescued and adopted two kittens, Audrey and Roberta. They have their own Facebook page. They are adorable. And, they are now part of a big happy family which also includes Madison the cat and Benny the dog. Hope you like the painting Judalaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

LOL You are too funny! I love the softness you gave to the city buildings and the trees. Roberta seems to have a lovely bird’s eye view!

I am guessing what is going on in Roberta’s mind watching this lovely scene and it is so much fun to guess her thoughts! Beautiful work Carol!
Try playing sudoku, thats how I am dealing with my short time memory loss 🙂

I’m glad you like the painting Padmaja. I am very bad at Sodoku, but can do crossword puzzles. I’ll still with those.

I like Padmaja’s idea. Makes me feel better since I play sudoku, too! …and Brain Age on the DSI. I really like this painting! I can identify with Roberta. I spent HOURS looking at the same stuff falling from the sky this winter!

I should start playing Brain Age. Roberta got a lot of window time staring out at the snow this winter. 🙂

Cats! Dogs! Snow! Dementia! You are outta control tonight !! I love this little painting. It looks so comforting and cozy… ! It looks like a beautiful Holiday / Christmas / Kawnzaa / Hannukkah card… really nice! ❤

Great idea Jim. I’ll paint some lights around the window and voila! A holiday card.

Yes, I WAS surprised when you said “Happy Thanksgiving!” because I forgot to say “Trick or Treat!”
Let’s hope to only remember the happy times as we head toward our golden years, i.e. the lovely gestures of you giving us Valentine chocolates and not those 3 hours of our lives that we couldn’t get back….
March 2, 2014 at 10:20 pm
Carol King
Yes, those 3 hours. Well, let’s hope we can remember it so we can laugh about it many years from now.

Terrific painting! I love the back of the cat and the hazy cityscape in the distance in such delicate colors. I’m in my 40s and I forget things left and right. I don’t think worrying about it helps! I think the best thing we can do to stay sharp is do new things and learn new things all the time. 🙂

Of course you’re right Cindy. As long as we are active and learning new things I think we will be ok. Thanks for the visit and comment.

I love the kitty portrait. 🙂 Yeah, at 50 I can definitely relate to memory loss. I look at it as nature’s way of decluttering the brain.

I find that my memory lapses come when I’m stressed or just too busy, with too many things on my mind. I’m usually pretty good but do hate it when I have a word in mind that won’t come out of the vault to my working brain!!

I love your painting and hate the ARP magazine which is just an excuse to sell ads for walkers and emergency response alerts and “easy” computers and cellphones with big letters. The main content is cheezy garbage, the usual ladies’ magazine fare: dieting, shopping, beauty, (old) movie stars, and like you say, senior scams, etc. I was a member for awhile (my mom signed me up) but I hated the magazine so much I refused to be a member any longer so I wouldn’t get the magazine.
I might try the peanut butter test…though it would likely require being immediately followed by a peanut butter sandwich.

I tried the peanut butter test and I think I’m ok. And the subsequent PB&J sandwich was yummy.

Beautiful painting – I love the one of Frankee too, you have a way with animals! I’m in the forgetful club, and the worrying about it one too, which should be comforting – they say if you’re worried you have Alzheimers, then you haven’t!

Hi Cathy, I’m glad to hear that if I’m worried about that disease I don’t have it. I’m happy you like this painting and Frankee. Thanks so much.

Fabulous painting!! I sympathize with your problems with name recall – but can’t you almost feel it creeping up through your brain until it pops out several hours later, when you no longer need it?
March 2, 2014 at 10:41 pm
Carol King
Hi Shirley. Yep, I can’t remember the name and then hours later as I’m going to bed BAM! It pops up. Thank you for your comment about the painting.

I love this, Carol!
And what does it mean if both nostrils are unable to pick up that peanut butter smell..I mean I can’t even smell that pot of water which dried up,while I was distracted, leaving the pot to continue heating smell.
fun post! I wish I was close enough to do stuff with you..even bad plays and Russell stover. You are a lot of fun!

Hi Cathyann, I’m not sure about not being able to smell anything at all. Hmmm. Maybe one of these days I will make it down to VA and we can do some fun stuff.

This is so wonderful and soft… makes me want to stay home and listen to a purring cat… (do you know my cat does not know how to purr? Apparently it is a learnt behavior: she was taken away from her Mom and left in a parking lot soon after birth and never learned to purr..)
March 2, 2014 at 10:44 pm
Carol King
I never knew that purring was a learned behavior. How interesting. I’m glad though, that you rescued your cat and now she has a happy if non-purrable home.

This is wonderful – you really feel that outside is sooooo cold and inside so warm. I wonder how may people have been reaching for the jar of peanut butter…?

Hmmm, I bet a lot of us ran for the peanut butter jar. Thanks for your comments.

You need to stop worrying about dementia/Alzheimer’s; don’t smell the peanut butter, just eat it (natural, of course). Beautiful painting.

LOL Hallie. Yeah I’ll just enjoy the PB and not worry. Glad you like the painting. Thank you.

Hi Carol,
I certainly can’t complain about SAD, living in Hawaii, but BAD, is another matter altogether. Honolulu has traffic rivaling the worst anywhere on the mainland and it’s a very noisy city, too. Sometimes, like you, the BAD kicks-in and it’s all I can do to wrestle it back into its cage.
But, enough about Thanksgiving and giving jelly beans to friends on President’s Day at a dance recital.
I love your humor and as soon as I finish this comment, it’s off to the fridge to perform the peanut butter test, if I can stop laughing.
Thanks for diminishing my BAD.
Gary.

Yellow post-it stickers are my ticket from memory loss. I stick them to the frame of monitor – “camomile management”, as my brother names it.
Cats are the masters of Universe, I see one more proof here.
Now I go to check the Alzheimer’s test to be sure.

Carol,
Thank you for the photo of the stuffed animals in the window. I do believe that they are trying to send some message and it is Fantastic that you captured this on film!!
Regarding all the stuffees, a few of them look very familiar to me. Please tell me what the address is, what street. I don’t understand why they would be so crowded in the window!! It is good of you to supply this photo of them. As you may know, I do have contacts at a City Agency called New York City Care and Control that deals directly with animal overcrowding in the five boroughs!! There was a “Twilight Zone” episode that took place in Brooklyn that was based on a true story of real animals that were transformed into stuffed animals.
Every night as the clock stuck 12, the animals all called out, “Marsha, Marsha, Marsha .” Was this never resolved? Please let me know.
