View from the 11th floor probably still a WIP 1-29-13
I did a little more work on this painting. The question is now, is it over worked. I don’t know. What I do know is it’s time to move on to something else and maybe revisit this at a later time.
View from the 11th Floor -WIP 1-22-13 Watercolor on 140# Arches coldpress.
This is not the view from my apartment. I wish. It’s from my friend’s apartment and is very special to me. After 9/11 I made my way uptown and stayed with Judy. Still reeling and in shock I slept at her place that night knowing that the Husband would be working for many, many days to come. The next morning when I woke up, I checked the window and yes, the Empire State Building was still there. I knew the twin towers were gone, so I was happy to see this part of the skyline remained. I still always check when I visit Judy. Just in case.
Judy has some beautiful plants on her windowsill and they grow tall with all the sun she gets. (I, on the other hand, live in a cave by comparison.) I thought the juxtaposition of the foliage against a backdrop of the city buildings made for an interesting picture. I plan on making the leaves and stems brighter and stronger in comparison to the skyline. I’m pretty much finished with the skyline with the exception of adding some suggestions of windows in the buildings. We’ll see. Below this window is Madison Square Park and then across the park are the buildings looking north.
It’s frosty cold in NYC today. More like freezing cold. I’m pretty sure if you’re in the US you’re cold too. Are you sick? Everyone here is. So is the husband. I woke up this morning with a tickle in my throat and a song in my heart. OK, the song part isn’t true. More like a runny nose. Stay warm friends.

I really like this painting Carol – pretty! Its very cold here in the UK too – lots of snow. We’ve been quite lucky here in lovely Yorkshire, compared to other parts of the country, but having said that, I didnt get to work on Monday.
Hope you are both ok x

Good morning! I love this– architecture and flora, the perfect combination. I remember those days right after 9/11. We all changed. And I’ve been following the building progress of the site.
Here it’s cold: 48 degrees, but it will be warming up to the 70s by noon. I’ve been giving a lot of tours of downtown Winter Garden to school kids in the mornings, and we don’t like when it gets below 65 degrees!
LOVE this watercolor!!

I love watercolor to begin with; however, I really like the color and composition of this. Even as a work in progress it resonates. I feel peaceful and hopeful, and I still recognized the skyline enough to feel echoes of sadness. It’s a very nice piece which will mean much to you and your friend in the future. Thanks for stopping in over at my place too. 🙂

This is really gorgeous, Carol!! I love the misty look of the skyline! I hope you can keep the sickness away. It’s been a bad flu season in Oklahoma.

Not sure when you took that photo from my window but it looks a lot warmer than it is today. Love it.

I have a special spot in my heart for two plain images. I know that simplification is an important skill, and yet when a painting has more than one plain the complexity of our world shines from them and reminds us of its beauty. Very lovely, Carol!

It is going to be gorgeous Carol, the skyline in the background and emphasis on the balcony plants makes the view from this balcony come alive. Looking forward to the finished piece, take care, it is cold in Muscat as well, but not that cold you get there 🙂

What a view to have every day! I like the soft colors you used for the skyline and the colorful flowers in the front. Great idea! I am so wimpy in the cold. I’m wearing several layers but yesterday no matter what I did I still felt chilly. It is even too cold for me to sit in the car and paint. lol Stay warm!

It’s definitely cocooning weather up here in the Great White North. I really like the concept and composition of this piece. Contrasting the delicate beauty of the flowers with the stark, though subtle, skyline.

I enlarged this one so I got the sense of standing at the window, looking out. Lovely view! You have a dear friend in Judy and you’ve painted a lovely scene.

what a wonderful view! no wonder you love to visit your friend to check it out. I love the contrast of nature and the concrete jungle -there’s no better skyline in the world!
btw did you get my email reply-we only got our broadband connected yesterday and prior to that the internet access on my phone was very patchy so I’m not sure it sent!

Seen through flowers and across an expanse of lawn gives New York city a different persona. Like seeing “OZ” from the other side of a poppy field.

I am with Rhonda on this one, Carol.
Yes, have been and still am sick! Lots of nasty viruses going around.
Put the song back in your heart, girl…spring is coming!
Happy painting!
