Bike and graffiti on wall – Work in Progress on 1/2 sheet of 140# Arches coldpress
Now that Hurricane Sandy has come and gone the devastation still lingers. Thank you to everyone who emailed, called, texted or commented on this blog to check on us. We are both fine although I haven’t seen the husband in about two weeks with the exception of a quick hello or goodbye.
Everyone I know lost power, but some lost much more. My sister-in-law and her husband live on the Rockaway Peninsula and lost everything on their first floor of their home as well as their cars. My niece lived on the first floor of an apartment building and she lost everything. Here’s an interesting piece 60 minutes ran on a particular area called Belle Harbor where they live: 60 Minutes Belle Harbor. But it wasn’t just Rockaway, It was so many areas in the NY/NJ/CT/PA Metropolitan Area. Little by little we are on our way to getting back to normal.
I finally got a chance to paint and started with the work in progress above of a city scene. This is a building I see from the art studio window. Someone painted a blue bicycle on a yellow field on a brick wall. Add some graffiti, water towers and it’s right up my alley. I’m thinking that after I finish painting it I may deconstruct it a bit by splashing water and paint on it. Everything else in the City has been splashed with water!
11″ tall decoupage under glass vase
Here’s another vase I’ve recently completed. It’s got blue birds and apples. Silver metallic with a white background. When I start out with just a clear piece of glass it’s called a vase. Long “A”. When I’m done and it looks like the above it’s called a VAHSE. Just so you know.

We are ok! Matt was very busy and some family members were displaced due to flooding. The City and really took a beating from this storm.

Your work in progress is fantastic – this might be my favourite piece of yours yet – there’s something about it. Your vase is gorgeous – whichever way you pronounce it! It sounds horrific for your sister-in-law. I still can’t believe it happened somewhere like New York/New Jersey and that even somewhere as advanced as that could be left reeling from mother nature’s wrath. Glad you and the husband are safe at any rate (and selfishly very glad we didn’t choose this year to get married in central park!)

Thanks for your comments on the painting and the vase Nicola. It’s been a rough month for many New Yorkers. I’m glad you didn’t get married this year in Central Park too!

water towers – you’re right: there’s nothing better than water towers, graffiti, and blue back-grounded by yellow. thanks also for the 60 minutes belle harbor link.

So glad you are okay but so sorry for the loss that so many have experienced 😦 I do hope FEMA and other agencies are actually helping those in need right now and not making you all wade through lots of red tape first. Love the painting – I can see lots of texture on the wall and I like the idea of you washing some of it away in honor (?) = not the right word, I know – of Sandy.
Laughed when you described the vaase to vahze change 🙂 So glad you have kept your sense of humor amidst all of this.

Hi Rhonda, I finished the bike but haven’t posted it yet. I never ended up splashing it. I guess I’ve had enough water for now. 🙂

Carol, I’m really glad to read you are okay. What we saw on the news looked scary and you were in that situation. Your painting is lovely, very cheerful somehow (I’m curious what the white ornament in the front is). Love to see it finished.

Hello Hanneke, Thanks for your comments and for thinking of us. That white ornament is actually graffiti.

Welcome back post “Sandy”, Carol! Can’t wait to see the result of the above painting, before and after splashing it with water. The VAHSE is beautiful. I like the textured collage-like appearance of it.

Leslie, I finished the Bike and now have to post it. The Vahse is basically a collage done from within the inside.

It’s getting to be a weird world, ain’t it? If it didn’t have people like you in it, it wouldn’t be near as tolerable.

I came over to your blog yesterday and was admiring the city scene, and then read down to the link about Belle Harbor. That sidetracked me and I never got back here to comment. I love that you paint the nitty-gritty scenes of the city!!! Can’t wait to see it finished. Love the vase too.
Back to Belle Harbor. I have a good friend who lives there 4 houses from the beach. Luckily her house is raised up so the only flooding she got was in the basement when the water backed up in the toilet and shower. Her cars were OK too. I don’t know how after seeing that video clip. I must have still been without cable when 60 Minutes aired that. I ended up sending the link to a number of friends which is how I got so sidetracked.
I hope that your sister is doing well with her cleanup. I think of all the people that were affected and how the holidays are coming. My thoughts are with them. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Hi Joan, Belle Harbor and all of the Rockaways got hit hard. My in-laws are still not back in their home. And my niece still needs a place to live!

Pleased to learn you are both safe and well. Your paintings are wonderful. I try so hard to find spontaneity and expression when I paint yet the 80-20 ratio always prevails. Yet you have the expression and individual style that we all look for. I always enjoy the narrative and art.

I am so glad you are OK and painting. I am so sorry I returned to blogging so late to ask.
Some kind of apathy blanket covered me this month. I hope it will be gone together with November.
Wonderful VAHSE.

Sorry I haven’t visited much these last few months, I’ve neglected so many friends and your blog has always been such a joy to read. Sorry to hear about the problems, but your painting of the bike and the vase are wonderful. Hope you and yours are well.
