Saturday, October 13th was the 37th World Wide Sketch Crawl. I don’t know where I was for the other 36, but I’m sure glad I made it to the 37th. I did it with the NYC Urban Sketcher group. We met at the new Barclay’s Center (Barbra Streisand would be singing there that night) and did some sketches, moved on to the Atlantic Center and then over to the Brooklyn Academy of Music area.
Not being a plein air anything it felt a little odd to be outside sketching, but the NYC Urban Sketchers group were a friendly, welcoming, TALENTED bunch and I felt right at home in no time although a bit intimidated at their sketching ability. I had a small 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 sketch book and every sketch I started was too big! Oh well, that’s why I only have part of a food truck or some of the windows of a building.
In the small world category, I met a “blog friend” who I had never met before. Joan T had come in from Long Island and I recognized her from some pictures she had posted of herself. Wow! It was wonderful to meet a blog friend. And BTW, She is a fabulous sketcher. Click on her name and it will bring you to her blog post about that day.
My sketches were simple compared to many who did amazing city scenes. But what fun. They do it each weekend and I have no doubt I’ll be joining them often.
A shout out to Alex Zonis who was the one who suggested I try the NYC Urban Sketcher group and who made the contacts for me. So thank you Alex! I will most certainly be going out sketching with them again.

What are you talking about?! Your sketches are great! So happy you had a good experience with Urban Sketching – the fun is in the doing and in meeting people. All over the world actually! We all speak the same language – visual one.

Thank you Deb. I did have a great time…after I got over the intimidation factor. I plan on doing this much more often. It really helps with my drawing skills.

So cool, Carol!! Joan T. is my friend from WetCanvas and I may be the link that brought you two together. That made me smile! Your sketches are great! It’s hard to sketch from life. Joan does it a lot, all over the world it seems. I wish I could have been there with you. 🙂
By the way… I love your pink shoelaces (or pink socks?). That is so “me”.

Hi Beth, It’s entirely possible that I “met” Joan T. from your blog! Maybe one of these days I’ll get to meet you. Yes, Joan is an amazing plein air sketcher as well as is her friend Susan. It IS hard to sketch from life! And yes, they were bright pink shoelaces! Love them!

Yay! How terrific to join up with the NY sketchers – if ever I make it to NYC again I’m going to make sure it’s on a Sketchcrawl weekend – will see you there… It’s an amazing way to experience places and meet people you know you’ll have something in common with. Happy sketching Carol!

Carol – It was so much fun meeting you on Saturday!!! Maybe Beth is the link between us. I think you did a great job sketching, especially since you haven’t done much plein air sketching and weren’t using a journal that was great for watercolors. Regardless, they came out great and have that “Carol” look to them. My favorite is the one of the windows…they look so Brooklyn. I definitely have to join the group again on their outings. Susan and I have been talking about doing it for a while, but it just never meshed before. When she told me they were meeting in Brooklyn and she sent me a link to one of their blogs I was hesitant. I thought I would be intimidated by the work some of them do. I am so glad we went. Hope to see you again soon. If I know we are joining them again I will email you.

HI Joan, It was great meeting you and Susan. I think Beth was the link. I was so thrilled to meet someone I only knew “virtually”. This was my first time plein air sketching, although I know you’re a pro at it. You must come in another time before the weather get’s too cold and we can do it again. Maybe you can give me some tips!

I think you do a great job with your sketches, Carol. I especially like the clock tower and the set of windows on the bottom. Views of windows always make me imagine what the interior might look like. They are always the beginning of a story, for me. Bravo for you!

Thank you very much Leslie. I like windows too. And roads. Sketching with people is hard! They peek over to see what you’re doing. LOL!

This sounds like fun. Great sketches, Carol. Those two men with the bike; love it. Half things give a great feeling of a drawing that is part of more, I like that.

Thanks Hanneke, after consideration I decided I like my sketches and I also like the fact that they are larger than the page.

Good for you, pushing outside a bit (in more ways than one). I like the scenes you did and that it shows partial views – let’s me fill in the missing bits.

Rhonda, Thanks for your comment. I agree that it’s good to have the viewer fill in some of the missing bits.

Thanks Cathy. Glad you like the sketches. And no problem about the Yankees. We’ll give them a little time off this year while Jeter’s ankle heals.

Carol, your sketches are great! My buildings are usually alot more wobbly than yours. Very nice. I have a friend who has an apartment in Brooklyn. She is on her way there now. I’m going to try to send her a link to this post. She will enjoy it. I’ve been trying to get her to visit the Barclay Center…

Thanks Linda, I’ve drawn my share of wobbly buildings too! I’ve only seen the outside of the Barclay’s center. Still not sure how I feel about it. Let me know what your friend thinks.
