Parking lot – WIP on 1/2 sheet of 140 # Arches cold press
I started this in the style of Tim Saternow whose workshop I took back in March of this year. I started with a grisaille (monochromatic painting in Paynes Gray) which is here:
There is still more work to do. I jumped ahead many steps too fast so this may end up in the “it was a good idea at the time” pile. But all is not lost as I did learn what not to do. Which often is as important as what to do.
I saw Rhonda was working on a portrait all in paynes gray which was pretty cool and you can see it here.
The image above is where we park our car. Which is about 3 blocks from where we live. And don’t even ask what we pay for that spot in an outdoor lot 3 blocks away, BUT, it is SO worth it when you come home and have to drive around the block for 45 minutes before something opens up. The Husband says it’s almost time to move. But WHERE? Any suggestions?
Is anyone else sick of the Olympics? Damn overachievers.

For me, this is another of your very cool water tower paintings, only this time we get to see it from below. Love the sky behind which accentuates that “dizzy” feeling when I look up at moving clouds next to a stationary building, Carol.
I thought you loved New York? I can not imagine you anywhere else. …Maybe a couple blocks closer o your car?

Thanks Leslie. As usual, it didn’t turn out as planned and like I said, if I was following Tim’s steps, I skipped a few or did them out of order. But it’s ok. More reason to practice.
Excellent suggestion about moving closer to my car! LOL! I may have to look into that.

I like very much the “fly up into the sky” effect of the painting. Somehow Tim’s works (thank you for the link) look a bit too dark to me.
Considering how Moscow irritates me sometimes and how I am glad to be back there after any shortest trip to other places, I agree with lesliepaints here.

Hi Irina, I appreciate your comments. Yes, some of Tim’s works are dark, but I do like the light in them.
I, too, am always glad to be home after a trip away.

I was in NYC in May and took dozens of pictures of water towers. They do take you up to the sky.

I love this painting, Carol! I have always enjoyed the way you add the grit of the city to your city paintings. If you move out of the city, you’ll have to practice fluffy white clouds. he he
Yes…. sick of the Olympics. It’s more of a science now, making the super athlete. Can you imagine spending your whole life preparing for a contest of super endurance beyond what our bodies are supposed to be able to accomplish, only to … lose? Sounds awful!

Hi Beth, thanks for your comment. I think the next step after doping is to make bionic athletes but adding parts to their bodies. After that it will be robots completing.

Your painting is very interesting to me since I have not seen this technique before. I have done an underpainting in oil but never it watercolour. It works really well! It gives your painting a wonderful mood. Very industrial.
Happy Painting.

Hi Nora, I’ve done one other one, and have plans to do more. I like the look it gives and I think this technique works well for buildings. Thanks for your visit and comment.

So you’ll move to Florida, nu? It’s what New Yorkers do… they move to Florida. We can do our show, finally… ME! (And when we fight, we will have competing shows; ME! And ME TOO!!)
We can film on a park bench and upload to You Tube. We will be famous!
Love the painting– I always say your city scenics are my favorites.

I did this for you since you kept telling me you were missing my city scenes. When will I have time to paint if I move to Florida and all we will do is kvetch.

I always love your NYC paintings! This one is great!! You have such a way of capturing the nitty-gritty slices of the city.
As for the Olympics…I still enjoy seeing those toned bodies doing things I couldn’t do in a million years.

Hi Joan, I don’t mind watching the events so much, but listening the talking heads go on and on and on! thanks for your comment.

Hey more water-tanks – your speciality! it is so good to see your work again after bunking for so long. I loved the Husbands gift in your last posting. Yeah – olympics – inspiring stuff! Today we were talking about the guys who train for eight years – life on hold – but don’t make the cut … the other side of over-achieving

Aha! You’re back after a long hiatus. Nice to see you, thanks for the comment. And yes, the husbands b’day gift was perfect for him.

Parking sounds almost like an Olympic sport too. Your painting is great, Carol (those colours and windows are great details), it places me in the city for a moment, looking up towards the sky.
