Spilling Strawberries – 13″ x 9″ in 140# arches cold press
I don’t have too much to say today. I am recovering from passing a kidney stone. And if any of you have experienced that, all I can say is ow, ow, ow. And I wasn’t even owtside when it happened.
I may add that this kidney stone passing is self diagnosed, but having had one before that was diagnosed by an MD with a degree I have to say that I will put my imaginary medical degree up against any real one in this particular diagnostic situation.
The above painting was done from a reference photo from Wet Canvas. The lovely and talented Beth Parker had a link to it at her blog. Thank goodness, because for the life of me I cannot navigate that website.
I forced myself to think “simplicity” when doing this painting. A sketch, a few washes and I was done. I used a bit of frisket in the colander, but I used wax to keep some of the highlights on the berries and on the colander hole reflections on the tablecloth.
My friend Judy said to me this week: I’m going to get my hair relaxed. Do you think they can do anything for my soul?
If only, Judy. If only.

You are turning on the “LIGHT” in your paintings, Carol. This is gorgeous. Tell me you did not do this in one session, please. I am so slow! I have heard it is one of the, if not, most painful maladies there is. So glad you got to this side of it. May I ask what red or reds you used for these strawberries because you nailed that color!
August 8, 2010 at 11:10 pm
CarolKing
Thanks Leslie! I must admit, I only did this in less than a few hours.
For the reds I first put a wash of yellow/orange. I then used a combination of cadmium red, and genuine rose madder. I used a little permanent magenta for a few shadows.

Ouch! Carol, I hope you feel better. What a happy painting-loved it! (I really like strawberries)

Ouch is right Patti. They say the pain is comparable to childbirth. Since I never had kids I can only say if people with kids did go through that pain, I can’t imagine how there are so many people on the planet!
I like strawberries too. Glad you like the painting. How are you feeling?

The strawberries would be a lovely compliment to the peaches that Mom did a few years ago for our kitchen 😉 Beautiful!!!
And so sorry to hear about the kidney stone. No fun!

I don’t remember the peaches that mom did. Maybe one of these days some berries of some sort will be whisking it’s way to the great state of Alaska! Probably cause Uncle Matt would have tossed them out. You know how he feels about ‘erries.

Self diagnosis feels so much better in the checkbook department. Now you can spend that money on more Arches paper so you can produce things that give pleasure ( like your watercolors ) and not things that produce pain ( like stones OY OY ! )
This painting looks like the recipient of bright sun shining through the window.

It IS sort of sunny, isn’t it. Thanks Bonalaaaaa.

Beautiful painting – just enough detail and lovely color! Sorry about the stone. I’ve never had that problem but know many men who have and it sounds horrid and painful and well, just horrid! I hope you are healing and getting stronger every day and that you don’t have another one.

The stone hurt like the dickens. Thanks for your kind words. I’m already feeling better, but just in case I will go to the doctor on Friday. I want to be sure there’s no more hiding in my kidney.
Thank you for your comments on the painting. I was happy with the bright blues in this. Happy that I didn’t make them muddy.

Kidney stone, OUCH! How awful! I am so glad this is over with!!! Anything you can do to make the occurrences less frequent?
I love the painting! Looks perfectly tasty and very inviting! But I couldn’t help but notice that the colander is nowhere near full… Where you eating the props again? 😀
August 9, 2010 at 9:54 pm
CarolKing
Alex, you caught me red-handed. The colander was certainly more full when I first started! : )
As far as the Kidney stones go. I must drink more, more, more water.

Um. Er. You did eventually go to a doctor, right? Kidney stones are horrifically painful. So sorry I’m late to send you these wishes! Are you consuming too much calcium? My doc just told me that those calcium supplements she’d been telling me to take for years and years are now maybe a problem. It never ends…these reversals of cures!
