Beach scene from Paint My Photo – photo courtesy of Karina Robin
Winter. I’m tired of it. And what is the polar vortex? I thought it was just called winter? Since I was too tired and too cold to join the NYC Urban Sketchers today I decided to stay home, watch watercolor videos on you tube and play with my watercolors. Using a watercolor sketchbook given to me by my nephews, I did this beach scene using a limited palette, no more than 2 washes and no drawing first. I’d like to be there right now.
I moved on to this dog, again courtesy of Paint My Photo using ESP’s photo. No drawing first, only using a few colors and a few washes. He looks a little sad. Why do all my painted dogs look sad?
And finally I did every watercolorists’ favorite subject. Pears. I did sketch the shape of the pears, but again used a limited palette and not many washes.
I’m off to do some weight lifting. My friend Christine and I were talking about how we can’t remember things anymore and she told me about how weightlifting helps to stave off Alzheimer’s. And I hear curls keep you warm.

I can feel the sun at the beach and the washes are very harmonious. Lovely trio too! Come to Oman if you don’t want winter :-))

Hi Padmaja, Thank you for the offer to visit Oman, but I think I will pass. I only hate the summer a little more than I hate the cold.
Thanks for your comments on the beach scene. I bet you have plenty of them in Oman!

I never liked winter. It was nice it ended straight after Christmas, I’m not surprised you’re feeling tired of it. It’s cold here, too. Like really cold, maybe it’s not that bad at your place.

I like your pears. I think I should get something done, as well. Nice mood and softness in your paintings.

Hi Inese, thank you for your two comments. Since you are in Ontario, I really can’t complain to you about the cold! And thank you for your nice comment about my pears.

You seem to be getting winter for all of us. All we’ve had is rain and more rain just like all the rest of the year! I like all your watercolour paintings but especially the dog-ESP puts great photos on paint my photo.

I belong to PMP but have never used any of the photos before. I was lazy yesterday and they emailed me with new photos so there you go! I will look for more from ESP. I saw your orangutan is from ESP’s photo.

Really enjoyed seeing your watercolor paintings this AM. I too live in NYC and although I love Winter, your beach scene makes me long for early morning beach walks SOON! Do you have favorite YouTube watercolor videos?

Hi Shirley and fellow NYer. Thank you very much for your visit and comment. I don’t have a favorite youtube watercolor video. I sometimes just google watercolor videos and see what comes up. Do you have a favorite you could recommend?

I think the “polar vortex” is another of those phrases they dream up to make us crazy when we listen to the weather. We missed you down the street in Brooklyn on Saturday. Looks like you kept busy…love the beach scene. The limited palette works well. And I think most dogs look sad. They never really look like they’re smiling. Hope the curls keep keep you warm and clear!

How did I miss two good posts? I just love the directness of these paintings;restraint in palette and washes is working well!
gosh, it is so cold here, and we are expecting more snow! But I am loving being housebound and painting. Where is this paint my photo, thing?

Really nice. I should try this. It would be like contour sketches…a good way to warm up each day.

I took a workshop with Jean Haines and she said every day she did exercises with paint. She would use two different colors and paint a small piece of paper from opposite corners with them as practice.

Little People!!!!! Love it! Your pears are wonderful and you captured the droop of that dog’s eyes and face really well. I,m tired of the cold and the snow. Time to be done with it.
