Lion in front of the Main Branch of the NYPublic Library – 5th Ave and 42nd Street.
On Saturday, October 27th the NYC Urban Sketchers met in midtown Manhattan. First stop was at the NY Public Library which was called the Main Branch and is now called the Stephen A. Schwarzman building. Who is he? I had no idea so I had to look it up. He is a zillionaire and CEO of a big financial firm. He is married to a Hearst. He is not even dead yet. Now this annoys me. Why? Because the Main Branch of the NY Public Library says something. It says what it is and if you’re a New Yorker you know where it is. What does the Stephen A. Schwarzman building say? It says some really, really, really rich guy who is not even dead yet can get his name on a building. So far the only name I had on a building was a bodega on 5th Ave. and 3rd Street in Brooklyn when Charlie and I were still doing the night dog walk before he upped and moved to Maine. It was the Carol C. King Bodega. Ok, not really. But it COULD HAVE been considering the amount of times Charlie and I stopped in there for a snack whilst walking dogs. (BTW, if you’re not British, using the word “whilst” sounds really pretentious, but I don’t care. I like that word.)
Now, my next question is why did they rename the Triborough Bridge the Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) bridge. The Triborough Bridge said something! You hear the name and YOU KNOW it goes to THREE boroughs. (Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx). What does the RFK bridge say? A really rich dead guy’s family got his name on something.
I could go on and on. In fact, I think I will.
The Interborough Parkway? YES! It goes between boroughs. The Jackie Robinson Parkway? I got nothing.
The Queensborough bridge? Goes to Queens! The Edward I. Koch bridge? No clue.
The Westside Highway? Gotcha! Runs up the West Side. The Joe DiMaggio highway? Stop it!
The biggest problem is that New Yorkers still call these places by their old names. If a tourist asked me where the Stephen A. Schwarzman building was all I would be able to do is stare.
SE corner of 42nd Street and 6th Ave looking towards the Bank of America skyscraper on the NW corner.
Which brings me back to Urban Sketching. (Yes, I was getting there.) The group met between the two lions in front of the library. They are called Patience and Fortitude. Names given to them by Mayor LaGuardia during the Great Depression. He believed New Yorkers needed both of these attributes to survive. We drew Patience. (Or was it Fortitude), then moved to Bryant Park which is right behind the Library. There were already ice skaters gliding on the rink that’s there in the fall and winter. Then to the Bank of America building on 42nd and 6th Ave. That’s right. 6th Ave. NOT Avenue of the Americas. Tourists, take heed. If you ask anyone where Avenue of the Americas is we will tell you we don’t know. But SIXTH Avenue is conveniently located between 5th Ave. and 7th Ave.
The GRACE Building from the Bank of New York public space on the corner of 43rd St. and 6th Ave.
Ok, I’m done with my rant. The Urban Sketching was fun, but I had to leave early since I was meeting some friends for a Lower East Side gallery crawl. Joan T. and her friend Susan can in from Long Island again, so that was fun. I was a little distracted by all the holiday stalls that spring up in Bryant Park for the holidays. (Yes, I’m also attracted to shiny objects.)
NYC is getting ready for Hurricane Sandy. They have shut down the subways and buses. The show must go on? Not on Broadway tonight and tomorrow night. The Husband is already working 12 hour shifts. Last year Irene had us running in circles and it turned out it wasn’t that bad for us in the City. I have a feeling this one may be different. Full moon, high tide, another storm coming from the West to meet Sandy. Yikes! Wish us luck.

You left out the biggest tourist !#$%^&*** of all, Carol. “Where is the closest red line stop?” The red line? WTF is the red line? I don’t know and I have no intention of finding out. Take that, Sandy! ;-(

The first time someone asked me about the “red line” subway I just stared at them. Apparently,I do a lot of staring.

I’ve been on the wrong end of this staring from my wife. I can only imagine it’s like looking in to the eyes of the devil. Happy Anniversary, honey!

Thinking of you my online friend. Stay safe. We are hunkering down here in Va where tomorrow evening will be our nail biter into Tuesday at noon.
Yeah…my goodness….why all those name changes? I agree, hold to the old ones.
Keep in touch….we will be watching how it goes if we still have electricity.

Thinking of you too. Sandy is a huge storm and we will both be feeling the effects of her. The name changes make me crazy. I refuse to call the Queensboro bridge the Edward I Koch bridge. Be careful.

Best blog post ever. And I love the drawing of the lion. (I wonder if you have a sister who loves libraries who would LOVE to have that drawing as a GIFT…..?!)

Thanks so much Alice. And yes, IF I had a sister who loved libraries I’m sure she would love to have the lion drawing as a gift. I will take it under advisement.

I love your lion and am glad they haven’t renamed it for some politician too. hope you’re OK and still have electricity and everything else you need. I agree with you re names of buildings. Our ballparks and stadiums have changed names so many times (sold to the highest bidder I guess) I wouldn’t know where to go if I actually went to ballgames. In Berkeley they renamed Grove Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Way which doesn’t fit on street signs so they say MLK Way/Old Grove Street. So locals call it either Milky Way or Old Grove Street even though it was it Grove St. NOT OLD Grove St.

As soon as I saw MLK Way I thought Milky Way too. I don’t know why they feel the need to rename everything. Thanks for your comment and I’m glad you like the lion.

YOU have plenty of food and water stocked up? I’m shocked.

At least Fashion Avenue still lets you know that it’s Seventh Avenue. And I hate how, in Dyker Heights, it seems that every other street is named for an obscure Italian who did… what was it he/she did again? (For you non-New Yorkers, Dyker Heights is a heavily Italian section of Brooklyn wedged between Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst and Bath Beach. It used to be WASPy– hence the anomalous Episcopalian church planted in the middle of the ‘hood.
I wish I could go on one of your sketching tours with you! Your work is wonderful and refreshing.
I’ll call you tomorrow to see how the weather is !!

That’s true, Fashion Ave also says 7th Ave. and no one really calls it Fashion Ave. We are hanging in there. Lots of crazy wind and a HUGE tree fell around the corner.

Oh good luck with the hurricane Carol, I’ve been thinking about you and other online East Coast friends – hope it’ll all be OK and you and yours stay very safe. Our place and street names have been going through a long process of changing from one set of politicians to another…I never know where I am.

Thanks for your good thoughts. It’s a bit crazy here now. Luckily we still have power, but parts of the City are already flooded. Ugh, Politicians and rich people rename everything. I never know where I am either!

Thank you Dana. We hope not to lose power. My husband just saw a neighbor walking around with her bike helmet in case a tree fell down. I think that’s a pretty good idea!

Your sketches are spectacular, Carol. I especially find the “Grace” one haunting. I stood outside of it in my senior year of college to see if people are “anonymous”. That horrid assignment almost made me not finish my degree!! But alas I hunkered (sp?) through and finished ~ never got the diploma but finished none-the-less.Pat and I are both home today. You, Matt and the pooch stay safe. Thanks for listening to my rant last night.Take care and keep on sketching, painting, writing, etc.! Dorothy

Thanks so much for your comment. I used to work in the building right next to the Grace building and was always attracted to the curve of the building. I’m glad you finished your degree!

Nice to see your work with the Urban Sketchers. Love the lion. My Dad once told me that those lions got up to pee every time a virgin walked past them but they hadn’t budged in a hundred years or so. Not sure where he heard that but he was a traveling salesman in his younger days.
Feel free to censor the story. Good luck with the storm.

Great post… and thanks for the diversion while “Waiting for Sandy.” D’ya think anyone went into the office today?

That answer would be yes….but not me!

Lauren and Pat, I know a few people made it to the office. I was working remotely all day after Scott called me at 8:30 am!

I love your rants, Carol! You are so right about those silly name changes. The art is terrific, too! I want to come paint with you wilst you do this. he he he I don’t even know how to use wilst in a sentence. Okie, ya know.

Oh… I forgot to say Be Safe! I’ve been watching the news and hoping you’ll be okay. Don’t let Sandy get you.

Those name changes really make me crazy. Thanks for your visit. Sandy is making a lot of noise outside and I think the rain is going sideways. Yikes!

Hey, I hear they closed the Hugh Carey tunnel today too.
October 29, 2012 at 4:39 pm

DON’T GET ME STARTED! The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel means NOTHING TO ME. The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel is perfect since it tells you it goes from the Battery to … wait for it … Brooklyn!

Love that lion, he has such a sweet face. The skyscraper looks huge behind that lantern.
Carol; I hope you are doing okay during this terrible hurricane.
October 29, 2012 at 9:45 pm

Hanneke, thanks for your comment and concern. That skyscraper is certainly huge compared to the light post. The building was taller but I ran out of paper!
We are ok so far, but so many friends and relatives are without power and /or having issues with flooding, trees down, etc.

I like your sketches, Carol, but the writing, this time, means everything! I hate it when they rename things already named. If people really cared about the people whose names they are using for these places they would put their names on something shiny new just for them! Plus; I am always hearing how New Yorkers can be so rude. I don’t mind saying that, here, because you know I don’t think like that. Well, if they are constantly re-naming things in New York, especially tourist places and roads and bridges that direct tourists to where they need to go, and the New Yorkers only know them by their previous names, then no wonder! New Yorkers aren’t rude! They, themselves, are being kept in the dark about who is what and what is where.

Hi Leslie, thanks for your comment about the sketches as well as the name changes. I agree these rich people should put their names on new structures.

Carol, thinking about you and hoping all is well and that you are safe and sound. Please put up another post when you can so we know you are okay and have truly weathered this storm. BTW, I agree with the name changes – what for other than to stroke the egos of rich folks??

Rhonda, thanks for checking on us. We are ok! And I refuse to call these bridges, tunnels and roads by their new (stupid) names.

Thanks Nora. Let me know when you’re in town. We can visit the lions.

I am still laughing as I type. I saw the signs for the Ed Koch Bridge when Susan and I were driving in for the day. I just shake my head. Who even knows that they renamed these things???
Your sketches are great! I love Patience/Fortitude (they need name tags). I like how you zoned in on her/him. I really enjoyed sketching that day and once it got too dark to sketch, Susan and I shopped a bit. I can’t wait to go back again, although certain parts we will need scuba gear to visit. Hope your husband isn’t being worked to death. How did your area of Brooklyn make out. Our immediate area was OK but so many areas by us were devestated. All the best!

Joan, we fared ok. Some family members a little worse off than others though.
The Ed Koch Bridge? Really! I hate that. They keep talking about the Hugh Carey tunnel still being closed and I really have to think what tunnel are they talking about?
