Museum columns WIP on approx. 9×12 Arches 140lb cold press
I’m working on a new technique taught by one of my wonderful teachers, Joan Iaconetti. It’s all about painting more loosely, applying thick paint, spraying it with water, letting it run, drip, whatever. Go back and paint some more.
Spray. Blot. Drip, Dry.
Working on this painting sounds very much like a laundry commercial. My laundry should be as much fun. Luckily I was banned from doing the laundry many years ago by the Husband after I turned a few pairs of his white boxer-briefs a lovely, non-NYPD, pink. Can’t change in the locker room with pink briefs. Lucky for me the Husband is EXCELLENT at doing laundry. And don’t even get me started on his folding abilities. Every once in a while when he’s folding t-shirts while watching the hockey game he will call me over, show me some of the folds and then tell me to be careful just as he pretends he got the equivalent of a paper cut. Oh he is amusing that Husband!
I’m enjoying this style of painting and hope to be posting more. I used mostly paynes gray and at the very end added a bit of raw sienna and some phthalo blue.

I love this painting. Very architectural. I remember doing watercolor of building interiors as a part of my Drawing & Perception class. The monochromatic quality is very alluring and mysterious. Love it!

This is REALLY good– great perspective, drama, scope… I love when you do architecture!
And The Husband sounds like a LOVELY person… I’ll bet he can also fold contour sheets!

He can fold everything. Glad you like the painting. Looking forward to Jupiter (but not Uranus).

I think I should try something like this and it looks wonderful more abstract than most of your other works that I have seen. It looks like huge columns in the corner of building, like a transportation center or a museum. Thanks for sharing and have a great day

Hey Ras, go give it a try. It’s quite liberating. And yes, they were columns in front of a museum.

Ooooo, I love this, Carol! I agree with everything KK and Jimmy said! My first thought was that this was the missing element in my NYC painting that you mentioned… the grit. Love it!!
My hubby does all the laundry, too. I am not to be trusted, after my very first time doing his laundry. (Who says blondes are dumb?)

Well Beth, you and I lucked out in the husband department! I would love to see another NYC painting. Use more grays and blacks this time.

More of this! This is so interesting. Do you work with a reference in mind or create from what appears on the paper, Carol. I like the whole idea!

There will be more of this. I really enjoyed painting this and it was quite freeing. I worked with a reference photo. One my teacher took and used for her own painting which won an award at the Salmagundi club!

Paint, rinse, repeat. Good therapy for the anally retentive. You get good paintings and clean underwear. Think I’ll give it a try.

it IS good therapy, anally retentive or not. Go, try! I will come over and see.
Thanks for visiting.

Oh this is great, Carol…you must do more of this type of work…buildings even. I’m going to check out her link too.
Listen, your husband is a real keeper. I got so enthralled with reading about him doing laundry I nearly forgot you had done a painting. Wow, no laundry day for you…way to go!

Ok, I shouldn’t reveal this, but he vacuums too!
thanks for your comments. I like architectural work as long as it’s not too fussy. I’ll be doing more, for sure.

I like the perspective in this and the technique works nicely for this!!! Way to go! I’m glad you have a resident laundry expert…I can’t say the same. lol

Thanks Joan, I’m glad you like it.
I didn’t always have a resident laundry expert. It took time.

That is a really cool technique, (and love the laundry story, you’re a smart smart lady!)

Hi Virginia, thanks for visiting. I’m happy to hear you like the technique. Sometimes smartness comes by accident. Happy accidents! Like in paintings.

Oh…been down that road of pink shorts, yep. My hubby does his laundry too although he is NOT a good folder.
I like this…moody and imposing. Can’t wait to see where you take it.

I think I’ll be doing another one this weekend Cathyann so be on the look out.

Very dramatic, towering, showing such strength and power… until he reveals his pink side! Oh! you thought I was talking about the painting, that too. LOL
Great job Carol, I really do think this about the painting.

What fun – I always enjoy loose, creative, unstructured techniques. I can see myself using this with my grandsons this summer. I agree that it is great when a husband is “domestically gifted”. Mine loved to cook and cruise grocery stores…and I loved to let him! I also totally changed the way I folded laundry when I saw the tidy way he did it. I was amazed!

Thanks for your comments Linda. And I very much like the phrase “domestically gifted”! that, unfortunately I’m not, so I’m lucky the husband has some of those gifts.

I like very much the shapes of this painting, looseness of the painting style. Opens imagination, really.
